Pilaster on the left, then Cedar Shakes

Hello,

Can you help explain how to install exterior door molding?

We had a sliding deck door replaced recently but on the outside, the Cedar shakes are torn, open and exposed around the door aperture.

No trim or molding is there and it needs tidying up.

I bought some decorative Pilasters to cover the area up but they do not sit flat against the shakes.

Do I need to cut the shakes on the house?
See photos:

*the new piece of molding (pilaster) is leaning on the house but you can see the edge I want to cover.

*Then you can see how the siding gets wider as it goes down.

*the other side you can see how it is ripped away and that's what I hope to cover with the pilaster.

*you can see the wide gaps since it doesn't sit flat on the siding.

Thanks for your help!
Sam
