Best trap door hinges

Hello,

I have a trap door in my basement floor at home to get into the crawl space.

Right now there are no hinges on the door, it's more like a "loose hatch" that can be lifted up to get access.

If possible, I'd like to hang it like a proper door and want to know what type of hinges you think I should use on this. I'd like to find the best trap door hinges possible as it's quite a heavy door and I want it to last. Ideally, hinges that are concealed under the door would be best because the door is carpeted on top and I don't want to interfere with that.
It lifts up and to the rear to gain access, and the door is made from chunky 2" x 6" therefore is 1.5 inches thick.

Any help or advice would be gratefully appreciated!!

Thank You in advance,

Rodger

Best type of hinges for a basement trap door
by: Gary

Normally for this type of door i'd recommend using counter flap hinges like the ones at this address: http://tidd.ly/ac6f0c7c (will need to copy/paste into your browser)
They fold up on themselves like you would see on a pub bar where the counter hinges up and folds flat onto the bar for access.

However, because you want the hinges to be concealed underneath and the top is carpeted you need a different type. Have a look at these hinges. I don't know if they are large enough for the type of door you have but it gives you an idea of the type (and name) of hinges you need. You could always use three or four hinges to be on the safe side. Like look relatively easy to install, as they just screw on underneath. http://www.hardwaresource.com/hinges/FURNITURE+HINGES/Concealed+Hinges+-+Hidden+Hinges/Lid+Support+Hinge%2C+Up+Opening

Alternatively, these may do the trick,

Let me know here if either of those won't work and for whatever reason, and I will try and find an alternative for you.

Good luck,

Gary
